Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is the 9th ADA recognized specialty of dentistry. This specialty is concerned with the prescription, production and interpretation of diagnostic images for the disorders of the orofacial complex. The science of oral and maxillofacial radiology is based on the principles of physics, chemistry, computer sciences and biology.

Currently in the United States, American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology awards the diplomate status to a qualified Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist. Five dental schools in the United States offer graduate courses in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.

In the state of Minnesota, there are currently two board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists.
